I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant, had a show 5 days ago and would like to know how much longer everyone else had to wait to meet their new baby.
Friday I started pains and contractions and phoned my local hospital who said it sounded like early labour and when the contractions resolved themselves to every 10 mins to give them a call about going in. They went regular to every 20 mins and then died away!!!!!
I tried to get an appointment with my local midwife but because we are a rural surgery I wont be seen til Friday unless I make an emergency callout so I have no idea if im dilated or effaced. the head has been engaged for 5 weeks now so I'm hoping not too long. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Also, I'm having constant back and tummy ache which do ease when I'm sitting down but come back with a vengeance when im standing up
Any Ideas?

Patience. 40 weeks is full term so you have two weeks to go. By this point in the preganacy most women would sell their significant others to get it over with. So all this impatience is normal.

As for everything else, Labor is pretty natural and you will begin true labor when you are ready to have the baby. dialation and such is a natural progression of labor and rarely happens without labor.

See your mid-wife friday and relax.

GOOD LUCK!

This all sounds completely normal, especially if it's your first baby. So long as your baby is moving it's fine. Try to relax and be as normal as possible. If your really eager to move things along take raspberry leaf tea, eat curry and fresh pineapple and have lots of sex! See your midwife on Friday and chill out in the meantime.

Rendeb- in the UK it is completely normal, and safe, for women to only see midwives. Many women do not see a doctor at all throughout their entire pregnancy, labour and postnatal period.

I'm like you, but I haven't had any show yet. I guess this is early labor and it could be a matter of hours or days (I know, it sucks) I guess we'll just have to be patient and wait. I'm having those back pains you describe, but I haven't had any close contractions. I saw my dr on the wknd and she told me just to wait, she said if I don't have any regular contractions then it could be days or wks.......I can't imagine getting to week 40, I'm so miserable already! Good luck

It sounds like you are in early stages of labour
The best way to get baby moving is for you to keep walking around!
I know its painful- I've had 3!- but gravity is the best thing- thats why the pains are much worse when you are standing but it will help to push things along
Good luck!

if i were you i would go to the hospital and get checked over, as the midwife may do an internal, which they did to my sister in-law after a couple of days of contractions and she was 3Cm's dilated, then her contractions started coning every 5mins, as just a membrane sweep will get things moving I'm sure...good luck.

Sounds normal to me, you are at least a week out still. This is your first isn't it? Your body will take a little longer with the first one. Want to hear something sucky... one of my girlfriends who was also pregnant had all these same things at about 37.5 weeks and it lasted until week 41! She ended up being induced. Keep your chin up and have lots of sex, sperm is a prostiglanden and will help you along!

It truly relies upon on the kind of question. some that are tediously stressful or trite, OR hateful rants OR at the same time as each be conscious is misspelled (lyke omg so mi bff and me an my BF were lyke all goin out an idk lyke omg .....) you recognize, those kind LOL. I pass those. yet i do not ideas reading via an truly lengthy Q even if it truly is first rate or exciting. most of the Q's i answer anymore are literally not lengthy notwithstanding. yet short, humorous, and to the point. xD ?

if i was you i would go to the hospital and not wait till friday to see a mid-wife...you should be seiing a doctor once a week since you are 38 weeks...you maybe in labor as i was and the baby in postion and just not dialating....and if the baby is in the birth canal and been there very long it can cause problems for the baby...so be safe and go to the hospital and see a doctor...

Just to tick you off - you will probably go full term.

My wife is at 18 weeks and is ready for this to end.
