I don't think you CAN make your boss do that. Some bosses are more inclined to cater to the requests of their staff but not all of them are like that. In terms of generosity, probably he/she is thinking that once they have given you your salary then they are not obligated to give you anything else.
Bottom line - different strokes for different folks.

Become an invaluable cog in the machine. Nobody cares about a replaceable peg, but if you become the piece that makes the machine fall apart, all of the sudden people bend a little bit more.
Once you become that piece, go look for another job, come back, and tell them youve got a great offer from another firm, but youre willing to negotiate with them first, then put the screws to them. In the future, they will hesitate to treat you poorly, because they will be afraid youll walk, and it will be far to difficult to get someone else trained to do your job.

Make of yourself the most valuable employee in the company. Not only will your boss treat you well, you'll get raises and promotions. If you work in a place that being productive, helpful, honest, early, productive (2x for emphasis), doesn't matter, then get a job where it does.
If all this sounds like too much work, or if for other reasons it won't work in your situation, get a straight commission job. You'll get paid exactly what you're worth, and not a cent lower (or higher).

You can't change a person.
Some suggestions: do what he says when he asks. Always be nice. Never back stab. Show him you are not a gossiper and prove it. Ask questions, be inquisitive without being a pest. Do your job well, with confidence and expedience. Offer to do more.
All of these may seem obvious, but at the same time, you need to gage how much you can do without being a kiss---. And like I said, you can't change a person and he may just take more advantage because he can.
