Every year - in addition to regularly staged shows - our group does a couple of play readings. We prefer to use a good sized cast (6 or more) - with "Big" characters who can be differentiated through their voices. Don't want to do Neil Simon or A. R. Gurney. (they are already in the season) We've done "You Can't Take It With You" and "Lone Star" in the past and both worked well.

I would check online and at the library for scripts from Old-Time Radio shows. Characters for these shows were specifically written for vocal interpretation only, since they were performed in a non-visual medium. Many often had more characters than actors, forcing actors to do double (or even triple!) roles.
Happy hunting!
