I grew up with an astrologer, so naturally I was skeptical. I thought I would try to see for myself if I could find any truth to it, once I moved away from home - and I did find constants and similarities. I was always very attracted to geminis and then always hurt by them, again and again - finally I learned to just stay away from romance with geminis, and my life has been much happier. I found that every person who wanted to pipe in and say "here's the part I played in this lovely event" sort of thing, was always a cancer - and every one of them loved a comfy couch and good book all afternoon.
It got so I could amaze at parties.
Then around the time when we were all turning 30 you could see consistent wig outs, as it were. By now I was a believer and was smart enough to consult my astrolger parent to find out what was going on. At that time she explained to me about a Saturn return - between the ages of 28 and 32 we all have to deal with this event. It is when Saturn comes back to the exact spot in the sky that it was in when you were born. Saturn represents responsibility and that is when we all really grow up, when we finally mature and start to take our place in society. If we are happy with our career and the way our life is going, it's a nice easy graduation. If we are not happy in our career or are just bouncing around in the world, it can be a total drag as you feel compelled to move ahead but you don't know where you are going.
I am an identical twin and my sister had a hard saturn return and mine was easy peasy lemon squeezy! She was just in little dead end jobs and i was working for myself - then within 6 months of the saturn return, I met my husband (and the work of building together began) and she had a baby (what's more grown up that being a mother) - in the same month.
So, yes - I think the planets influence our lives, but I don't think they influence our purpose (I think we choose our purpose and our chart supports our choice - we pick that too). I think the planets move in a cycle and they guide us by inspiring the next step - by gently pushing us down the road and helping us to grow.
Now it is Uranus opposition time for us all (38-42 yrs of age) and that is a time when uranus is exactly across from it's original spot. At this time we are asked Do you live life for others or do you live life for yourself? That is a hard question for many of us, but this aspect forces of the issue, forces us to move closer to our intended goal - if you know what I mean. I don't know how it works, but it is uncanny.
Wow - how great to get this all down on paper. Thanks for the great question!
Peace!

The word "influence" is a big problem because it suggests a common, but very naïve, view of the nature of astrology. The planets do not CAUSE us to do anything. If astrology works at all, then it probably works through synchronicity (patterns of connection that cannot be explained by direct causality – see link below for more information about that). So if you ask whether the planet influence us "on purpose", then the answer clearly has to be NO. The key term to consider is the word 'SIGN'. Smoke is a sign of fire, the smoke does not cause the fire. Nausea is a sign of the flu, but it does not cause the flu. The position of the planets is, according to astrology, a sign of certain patterns in your life. The planets do not cause these patterns. The astrologer reads your horoscope like the way that a hunter reads animal tracks. Astrological patterns tell the astrologer where you've been and what direction you are headed, just like tracks tell the hunter information about the deer.
One additional thought: Some might say that the planets symbolize forces in the world that do influence us in a causal way. In this case, it would still not be the planets themselves that influence us, but rather, the cosmic forces that are indicated by the planets. But I would still be skeptical about claims that these forces act purposefully. Purpose implies intelligence, which would suggests that intelligence of some sort is trying to push or guide us around (like the way that people living in ancient times believed that gods and goddesses influenced their lives). These days people are more likely to think in terms of angels or spirits of some sort influencing us from some other dimension. I don't personally believe in this way of thinking, but on the other hand I do not see such beliefs as be pure foolishness. We simply don't know enough about the nature of matter or mind to rule out such possibilities. My guess, however, is that if there are some sort of intelligent beings purposefully influencing us from other dimensions of reality, then these "other beings" will ultimately turn out to be "ourselves" in some deep way. I am fairly confident in saying that each of us is a Being far more vast than we consciously understand. What we understand about ourselves consciously is just a minuscule part of who we really are. By my way of thinking, any gods, angels, spirits, or whatever who influence our lives are, in some deeper sense, really just subconscious aspects of our Being. If astrology (or other forms of divination such as Tarot, I-ching, etc.) has any real meaning for us, I would say this meaning stem from it ability to allow these unconscious factors in our lives to come to consciousness. In other words, they get us in touch with our Selves in a deeper way. I've put together natal charts for people (and I've had my own chart read), and in my experience it really doesn't matter whether or not there is any scientific basis for the effects. The simple fact is that astrology can be a path to healing and self-understanding for some people, even though we don't necessarily understand how it really works.

the superb answer is that the planets (jointly with Earth, of direction) are in our photo voltaic equipment because they couldn't get away the gravitational pull of the solar. they do no longer have any authentic purpose. The universe is so large that even our galaxy is tiny in evaluation to the dimensions of the universe. Any "importance" we position on earth, the solar, or the Moon is in trouble-free words because we manage those issues each and each of the time, and under no circumstances because they have any purpose in the universe.
