why when I put in a search in yahoo or google and click on one of the webpage results it takes me to another totally different webpage?

It's called hijacking. Somewhere along the line, during your surfing, a malicious program entered your system. You need to scan your system with all of the legitimate anti-malware programs. You can use HiJackThis, but only as a last resort, if none of the others work.
