Speaking as an "old fart goth" who's lived in three different countries I can say that it depends wholly on where you live:

In Germany, no one even looks at you strangely. In fact, there are so many goth clubs in Berlin alone that you caould go to three or four a night for a week and still not see them all.

In America you are treated as an outcast, a Satanist, a druggie, and many other vile things, because Americans are obsessed with appearances and judging people based on looks alone. (I am American, so I can say that with impunity, having seen it from both the inside and the outside).

In Japan it's just considered a fashion choice and there isn't the "social stigma" attached to it like there is in America. No one follows you through stores expecting you to setal, or assumes you are strange or a bad person for dressing that way.

In any case, personally, I enjoy it as being able to express myself freely through fashion. I try to stay away from "store bought" goth as much as possible, or at least wear it in a creative or interesting way. It's a creative outlet and a way to meet other possibly interesting people. It's also a good way to meet people who at least are not judgemental of you based solely on your choice of fashion. If people think of me strangely or judge me based only on my looks, then they are not someone I would want to know anyway. ~_^
