I was thinking about this myself last night, while I was re-reading Martin Luther Kings "I Have A Dream" speech.
Ya know what I think it is? People like that only come along once in a while, they aren't born everyday. And they're often the ones who are persecuted (at least in their younger years) by others and thought of as "nuts". I think in this day and age it becomes harder for those of us able to 'think outside the box' to go against the grain of society, simply for fear of being ridiculed.
But at the same time I don't think we have seen the end, or the last of the "great political orators"; we're just in a loll.

I have wonder about the same thing for a long time.
Maybe is because people with charisma often promise things. When they cant keep up their promises people gets disappointed and don't vote again for a person like this.
Also people of today care more about the stars gossips, and Hollywood chatter, they don't care about the last speech of the president, because they think is boring, or they say " They always talk the same".

Great political oraters still exist! Collin powell sold a war over WMD, with no WMD! Saddam inspired a nation till the day of his death. Even GW had a nation folowing him, till they found his rhetoric was without substance. What about Jerry Falwell and Al Sharpton, if it wasnt for their oratory abilities, would anyone follow them?

Unfortunately, we ourselves are responsible. We demand of our candidates and leaders short snippets of their policies, thier beliefs. Instead of listening to them lay out ther ideas an supporting them with passionate rhetoric and fact, we now listen to carefully crafted soundbites meant to give us a general idea of what they mean.
We as a voting electorate have failed to engage ourselves in the political process. As a result of the public losing interest, politicians must cram everything possible into their given 15-seconds to win votes, leaving no room for the beautiful and stunning oratory of past times. As a result of this editing, the shrinking minority of interested citizens is turned away by this shallow, made-for-tv language.
Thus, because of our failure to take notice of the political process, as well as politicians' needs to make the most of our minuscule and shrinking attention span, we are constantly moving away from the great speechs of before. JFK, Churchill, MLK, and others didnt have to condense their speechs or truncate their statements.
