Except for the brother-sister connection of course.

Secondly, does age play any significant role in this?

It is in my opinion that in every relationship between a non related male and female there is sexual attraction at some point between at least one of the two in the relationship. If the female thinks it is purely platonic, chances are that the male at some point wants more and if it is the male insisting that the relationship is only friendship then chances are that at some point the female has sexual tensions. We are human beings and it is natural for us to be sexual beings, it is the calling of god to procreate more beings to believe in him/or her. Age plays a role because those that are friends in late adulthood may not have the capability of having a sexual relationship, but you have made it clear that this question is referring to young men and young women. Hormones my friend, they are truly something to be considered and they sometimes cause us to do things that are not within our immediate nature when they are out of control and raging. In summary, if the male and female in question are not of the homosexual persuasion, there is a completely viable reason that if a male and female relationship is to last for an extended period of time sex will most assuredly be and integral part of the relationship.

The difference between platonic and romantic relationships is ultimately sexual activity.

So, I would say yes - if the relationship you describe is a romantic one. If the relationship is a platonic on, I would say no.

Friendship is a part of both romance and platonic relationships in my opinion.

I thing each relationship is unique that its impossible to say that age plays or doesn't play a significant role. I think there are too many other variables to make a general statement on that aspect.

Age plays a very important role. Wait until after 18 years of age. But sex in a relationship is very important, but not the only thing.

I'll answer your question in two ways. Mathematically: 20 goes into 40 a lot easier than 40 goes into 20. From a maturity standpoint: Younger men offer older women a variety of things, youth, energy, creativity and a chance to temporarily relive their youths. Beyond that, there isn't much for an older woman and younger man to discuss, particularly if the age difference is 14 years or greater. Also, consider that a younger man won't have the financial stability or volume to sustain the older woman in the lifestyle to which she is accustomed. He may not be able to take her to fine restaurants, pay for vacations or trips, and certainly won't appreciate the arts (theaters, museums, etc.) And she certainly isn't going to take her boy toy as her date to her company functions.

My inclination is to say no. In my experience it depends on the pasts of the two people involved and their expectations.

No, it isn't - not for me, anyway. I am female, most of my closest friends are male and that is just what they are - friends, no more.
