Life. This is done all the time. They use contingent contracts for it. If you don't find a house in the specified time, then the contract describes what happens, each can be different, but essentially the move chain is broken

it's simply called a "chain".

you'll notice some adverts for sales say "no chains", meaning they want to avoid the delays that are caused by reliance on so many different people moving.
