The answers to your question are very informative. The only thing I'd like to add is that I don't think your question is odd at all. There's nothing wrong with wondering about the little day to day habits of another culture.
The "shower shoes" or "flip-flops" are made of rubber or vinyl. You just slip your foot into them. There's a little piece that goes between your big toe and the next one, and a upside-down V shaped strap covers the top of the foot. You can slip your feet in and out of the shoes quite easily.

I don't think people wear shoes in the shower. I won't wear shoes in the shower at my own home. The floors are not icy cold because of the heating system we have. Rubber slippers can be used while taking shower, especially at the swimming pool and beach.

I wear flip flops if I go camping and have to use the community shower because of the many different people that have stood on the floor before me. Otherwise no I don't wear shoes in the shower. My feet are not cold because we use heat in the winter months to heat the house. I live in a modern house that has heat and electricity and plumbing.

In my personal shower I put down a vinyl mat to prevent slipping/falling which puts a layer between my feet & the tub. I also have throw rugs on which to step after the shower. If the bathroom is cold, a few minutes of running the shower w/hot water warms it up nicely & house shoes are nice in cool temps for after.
I have & do wear thongs/flip flops/slippas in public showers like at a gym or pool to prevent fungal infection. See the following website for pix.

uhhhhh, is this serious? why would my floor be icy cold in the winter if I have heating in my house? it might be a little cold, but not so much that I need to wear shoes in the shower. Some people have flip-flops that you can use if you need to shower in a public shower or something, like if some people shower at their gym, but that is for sanitation purposes.

Most American bathrooms are well heated. There are shoes called shower shoes that some people might wear. People in some warmer countries wear these same shower shoes for street shoes.

Interesting question. The answer is yes in some cases. Mostly when in a public shower, to help guard against disease. I don't think that anyone wears shower shoes in their own homes. At least I don't.

I wear water shoes specifically designed for such a purpose. I wear them so I do not slip while in the shower as wel as protecting my feet from pathogens that may linger on the shower floor. I love my water shoes!

Most don't, but some use flip-flops (a kind of sandal) if it's a public shower. Otherwise, we just keep mats or towels on the floor so the cold floor doesn't bite our nice warm feet! ;-)

Unless it's a public shower (in a gym, for example) I don't wear shoes while showering. I don't even wear shoes around the house most of the time!! If I'm showering in a public shower, I'll wear rubber flip-flops. (Don't want to get any nasty foot fungus!!!)
