Hey Dude,

A cookie is like an ID badge. Web sites issue them to users as a way of recognizing users when they come back.

Let's say you come to my web site. I have you fill out a form or whatever, and then give you a cookie (ID card) based on the information you provided to me. When you come back to my web site, I look or you present a cookie to me and then I give you information based on the form you filled out.

This is where it gets messy. If someone hijacks your computer, they might be able to steal your cookies and then pretend they are us. Sometimes the cookies are harmless, like zipcode weather, othertimes, people might be able to steal your identity.

Many Internet sites do not work without the Cookie system. I recommend that most people leave it on, but clean them out daily. It can be a pain, but it is worth it.

Tom

A computer cookie is a small text file which contains a unique ID tag, placed on your computer by a website. The website saves a complimentary file with a matching ID tag. In this file various information can be stored, from pages visited on the site, to information voluntarily given to the site. When you revisit the site days or weeks later, the site can recognize you by matching the cookie on your computer with the counterpart in its database.
