Of course they think. There is a ton of scholarly research on this. Are the people who were laughing at you college educated? Have they even taken a course on physiology, animal cognition, comparative psychology, or cognitive psychology? If you want to find info on animal cognition, you could easy search a university website or use the EBSCO host database to obtain scholarly articles.

Also, remind them that people are animals, and we have cognition.

Here's are 2 true stories that shows not only can animals think put they can solve problems.
Tassy is my 13 year old Old English Sheepdog X and she has always suffered heat problems because of her thick coat. Back when she was about 2 we had a couple of big pine trees growing in the back yard and when the pine cones started falling, every week I would pick up the cones and put them in the garden beds. We had a couple of young trees that had been boarded by logs to protect them from the children and their bikes and other rough activities, the borders measured about 1.5 meters square and I started to find these log borders filled up with pine cones. I had a go at the kids for moving the cones and put them back on the garden beds but the next week was the same, this continued for over a month until one day I saw my dog Tassy picking them up out of the garden beds one by one and taking them over to the tree with the log border. She had made herself a bed that was obviously not only comfortable to her as she promptly went to sleep on it when she had finished it, but it kept the air flowing beneath her which was keeping her cool.
My other dog a doberman X used to take the big beef leg bones we bought him and throw them down the concrete stairs time and time again until they where cracked enough that he could bite them and get the marrow out from inside.
If that doesn't show some thought process nothing will.

And if they didn't think how long would they survive?? Even from birth they think--they think they are cold so they snuggle they think they are hungry so they search for food--They have pretty much the same thoughts we do--so tell your friends that if they are dumb then so are we--and on that thought I think we have the dumbest thoughts of all humans think of ways to self destruct everyday--go figure--Where as animals spend their days thinking of ways to survive even bugs find a cool spot to hide on hot days---hummm--

I think animals have feelings and I think they are capable of thinking as well. However, they may not be able to think as deeply as humans do. They have a brain, so they can think!
