I want to nominate somone for a new years honour, he was a community police constable man in the 50s, 60s and 70s, he never took promotion because he wanted to stay working with the community and before that he was an airial photographer in the RAF, spending 3 years in eygpt. so whats the chances he will be chosen for an honour (e.g mbe). Thanks

You need to get an honours nomination form and fill it in carefully with the nominees details and explan exactly why you think they deserve an award.
You also need two independent letters of support. (Perhaps you can get one from a high ranking Police officer who knows him?) and send them all off together.

It takes about 12 months, so he certainly won't get anything in the Birthday honours this June, and probably not in the new Year Honours next year.

You won't be notified if your nomination is successful, but if successful he will receive a letter asking if he would accept an honour.

To be eligible for an honour you have to be still doing whatever service you are being nominated for so if, for example, you are a lollipop lady for 50 years then you have to still be doing it when you are nominated and still be expecting to do it for at least one year.

The website that many people have already provided links to is a good source of information and says:

Has your nominee:

- made a difference to their community or field of work?
- brought distinction to British life and enhanced its reputation?
- improved the lot of those less able to help themselves?
- displayed moral courage and vision in making tough choices and hard applications?

Good luck!

It takes a very long process. I have been nominated about 6 years ago and am still waiting. It was leaked out to me by a colleague that I have been nominated for an award, but nothing as to yet.

Zero. His exploits were too long ago.
