Change in y = -1 - 5 = -6
Change in x = -6 - 2 = -8
Total change = √[(-8)² + (-6)²]
= √[64 + 36]
= √100
= 10 units

use the formula: sq. root of (x-X)^2 +(y-Y)^2
= root (-6-2)^2 +(-1-5)^2
=root -8^2 +-6^2
=root 64+36
=root 100
=10

if two pts are (x1,y1),(x2,y2) then their is given by
d = [(x2-x1)^2 +(y2-y1)^2] ^ .5

so, let x1 = 2, x2 = -6 , y1= 5 & y2= -1

therefore , d = [(-6-2)^2 +(-1-5)^2] ^ .5
= [(-8)^2 +(-6)^2] ^ .5
= [64 +36] ^ .5 = 100 ^ .5 = 10 units
