My son who is nearly 6yrs old won't poo on the toilet. He prefers to poo in his pants. He uses the toilet for wee's though so i don't understand why he won't poo on there.
My husband and me have tried allsorts. I never had this problem with both of my daughters so i don't know where i've gone wrong.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Have you got one of those kiddy loo seats that he can use, and perhaps a step so his feet aren't dangling?

He may be afraid of falling into the toilet?

When I was young I had a vivid imagination & used to be scared of the toilet incase something nasty came up and grabbed me! I think it all stemmed from a fear of falling in because the seat was too big and my feet didn't reach the floor.

Never, EVER lose patience with him as it could be some kind of anxiety driven behaviour which could only get worse if he is punished or yelled at.

Maybe he doesn't like the water splashing on his bum...
Maybe he likes the feeling of warm poo in his pants...

My brother had a similar problem when he was younger. I'm not quite sure why, but he grew out of it in the end. He used to get very embarrassed when it happened, especially at school.

Does he do it all the time, or especially in school? Perhaps he finds it difficult at school either because he's embarrassed to ask to go, or because the teacher won't let him?

Try asking him why.. Even at 6 he might tell you.
or tell him you'll have to put him back in nappies.

At his age this is unusual, how does he handle school? If he can control himself and not have accidents at school, then he should be able to control his self at home too, this is a sensitive issue, but if you do not want a 10 or 12 year old still pooping in his pants you had better seek professional help.

i'd take him to the doctor or something because at 6 years old children should know they poo in the toilet not in their underwear.
