Not an accident. There had never been any person in history who tore his head off when hanged. Considering that the same rope was used and same height of fall for all the executed prisoners, this is quite an unusual case. Not unless they used a piano wire to hang him.

I was not going to answer this but it is "fairly" common in the Middle East in such as Kuwait and I think the Saudis, it all goes back to the British military tradition and procedure for execution.

Since you are "Aussie" I figure you can stomach it.

Military judicial execution is basically what the Iraq's "try" to accomplish, however, it appears that they just do not have the aptitude for even doing this correctly.

All is based upon a military manual: that even Australia had say 100 years ago to after WWII developed by the Brits, used by the Americans.

The issue is one of the person's weight and other physical characteristics applied to the distance for the "drop" as to cause the breaking of one's neck and spinal cord.

If the drop is well a bit much, this is what happens, actually in many cases it "almost" happens. The American and even you Aussies did quite a few after WWII on war criminals from Japan.

I note without this gruesome result.

Iraq is worse than I suspected as to having the ability to do anything correctly or "proper".

G'day

While I can't rule out purposeful mutilation of the body (or the guy while still alive), I once saw a documentary on hanging. If the rope is not placed JUST RIGHT, it can cause all sorts of mutilation...and yes, decapitation.

The criminal's weight plays a factor as well. Problems like that are more likely to happen with very overweight people. The picture I saw of this guy seemed to show that he was overweight...but how much is hard to say since he was wearing robes.

yes it could have been a simple mistake. If the length of the rope, the body weight the drop distance are not just right, then this can happen.

Of course it was an accident. If they wanted to cut his head off they would have just beheaded him. This is Iraq we're talking about. They have no shame in their game.
