So far the experts think it is hereditary. Usually a parent or other family member has this same condition. My son is congenitally missing number twenty. I have all of my natural teeth as does my husband, except for our wisdom teeth which we had extracted. So in our families case we don't know where our son's missing tooth came from in the family, if it in fact is hereditary, and not just a fluke.

No one knows the actual causes, only that it can be traced back in your family history, or found in DNA. Some say it's a way of keeping a family trait within a family. It doesn't mean that every time it will happen, just that there is a higher likely hood that it will. Just as you are more likely to have the same color skin, hair or eyes as one of your parents.
