Discover is not readily accepted at all merchants. I used to own a business and we accepted them for a while but it was confusing at times so we dropped them. We only got about 3 a year anyway. Go for MasterCard or VISA. They are accepted worldwide.

Unfortunately YES they can. This is nothing new, some gas stations have done it for years, it is getting more common now due to the increases by the credit card companies. The merchant has to pay a monthly fee for the equipment to process the transaction, then they are charged a percentage of the total sale. Most businesses include these fees in their prices, but this punishes those who use cash. If you sell something on e-bay and take pay-pal, you are charged a fee to accept pay-pal, as well as the final sale fee charged by e-bay. Merchants are getting hit all around. But it can work the opposite, example: Wall-Mart. If you purchase a pre-paid card from them, they give discounts on gasoline at their gas stations when you use the card to purchase gas. Go figure!!!!
