Originally, to give pat answers for things we didn't know. There was a time when "God did it" was just as good an explanation as anything else. There was so little we knew about the world that it seemed like there were just spiteful beings somewhere causing things to happen.
These days, religion is its own purpose. It is self-perpetuating. It's goal is to get more converts, which give it more money, which allow it to spread to get more converts. Politicians also use religion to sway large blocks of voters. Religious people are already to follow leaders who claim authority based on nothing, so they are ripe to just by into what the religion says is the proper side of any issue. This is a powerful political tool.
However, we've really lost the original reason for needing a religion. We now know enough about the universe that it no longer seems like pernitious gods causing strange things to happen. There is still quite a bit we don't know, but we have figured enough out that most of what we see makes sense. There are still a few holdouts, like the Creationists, who really cling to their gods as a better explanation than real evidence and discovery. But even they have conceded, for example, that lightning is not created by some god in a volcano.

Even a wrong religion can have certain benefits. A lot of good fellowship and comfort during stressful times in life can be acquired, even from a completely STUPID religion.
Also, a lot of important history and cultural stuff is communicated very effectively by religions. This stuff makes us more human and more a vital part of our communities. It can help to give a more defined sense of self.
On the other hand, a lot of religious stuff can send you to the psychotherapist office for YEARS, so you have the weigh and balance the costs.
Happy Holy Slappy Days!

there is no purpose. we are all going to argue which religion is the best , but remember that religion is man made, all of them, the thing we all have in common is the faith in god and god we will all agree (except athiests) is NATURAL and REAL.

Peace!
I am a Catholic. I believe Jesus Christ founded this religion so I joined it. It enriches my faith and my relationship with God and fellow believers. Are those reasons good enough for you?
