For me it depends on what I eat. If I have a heavy or rich food, or eat too much, I do not sleep well. If I have something light, I sleep just fine. Some foods seem to make me sleepy and help me to fall asleep. I am not sure that eating before sleep is unhealthy. As I said, I think it is what you eat that affects sleep.

I have always been told not to eat after 8pm as this is the time of night where we tend to relax & not burn off calories etc. I was also told that it's not really healthy for the digestive system. If you feel hungry have a glass of water or if you must have something solid try an apple or a banana. Another suggestion is have six meals a day. Your largest meal should be breakfast but we know with busy lives that's impossible. Have a piece of fruit or a biscuit or something small for morning tea. Lunch. Fruit etc for afternoon tea. Dinner. Snack before 8pm. Doing it like this in smaller portions is less likely to make you feel hungry and drink fluidsespecially water as it helps fill the tummy.

If you're hungry have a small snack such as crackers and peanut butter and/ or milk. If you go to bed hungry you may not sleep well because your stomach may wake you...but you don't want to go to bed on a full stomach or after eating spicy foods because that may wake you also.
