AVI files are the best because they are smaller in size than DVD rips and are good quality too.

The best 2 formats would be in DivX and MPEG4. Although both have DVD-like quality DivX movies usually have smaller file size than MPEG4. You'll be needing to download a DivX player to play it. (I have not tested if Windows Media Player plays both these formats.)

MPEG movies are good. Also Windows Media Videos (WMV). It's up to you. Just make sure you have a player that can play your videos. I mean, like Real videos. You can only play .rm videos with Real Player.
