My mum wants a baby galah. She wants the bird to bond with her so would like to hand rear it. She doesnt want to take on the bird too young as the feeds are required so often and may become sickly without its mother. Although she wants to start handling it before it becomes too attached to its mother. Any ideas?

Has she ever reared any before? thats the first thing to consider, its hard, expecially since all the cockatoos ive reared have been so fussy with there feeding,

Also it could be even harder for your mum as cockatoos can sometimes be very hard to wean and even harder to wean if u have no experience.

I Know someone who bought a galah and was told it would only require an extra week of feeding, two months on she still couldnt get the bird to eat enought to stop the handfeeding that went on for a while.

My lad was fully weaned when I got him, not sure exactly how old but he still had the grey juvenile feathers. In spite of the lack of early contact he is very attached to me.

I have hand reared a number of other birds, from as early as nil feathers and eyes barely open, but only due to the necessity to keep them alive.

age doen't matter, as long as she feels she can take care of it
