I know they must be going really fast but you can see the plane for so long going over what seems a real short distance!

You know when you are in a car and the trees near you fly past really fast, but the ones in the distance dont seem to move much at all? Well its the same principal with the plane....
The further away you are to something it appears to go slower even if it is travelling fast.

When it looks like it's over your neighbors house, it's actually several miles away. That's because the airplanes are 7 miles or so up in the sky. Even though they're going close to 600 mph, they don't look like they're moving fast because they're so far away. Same with the clouds. On a puffy cloud day, the clouds are about a mile up there. Even though they're moving 30 MPH, they look like they're crawling.

The question is how far away are your neighbours. If you live in Australia then it could be a long way.
