it seems Socrates used to believe that death isn't the end. Death is the separation of the body from the soul. Looks like this separation of the body from the soul, is the understanding and knowledge searched by philosophy.
Socrates has spent his life preparing for death, in the hope that in the next world he will attain the wisdom he has sought in this life. The philosopher is not like the lover of the body. The real virtues depend upon understanding, which Socrates compares to a cure or purgative.
Philosophy is the practice for wisdom, obtained by the separation of the body from the soul <---death.
It seems on my view, that Socrates used to see death as an opportunity for his practice and apply the wisdom he gained in this life.

One could state that the primary focus of much philosophy is to explain the "why" in "why are we here". To do this the philosopher must confront and penetrate such concepts as the possibility of fate, the concept of free will, the concept of inherent knowledge, and of course, death. Socrates's quote, I believe, is referring to the constant contemplation of death by the philosopher, since so many questions about the nature of life lead to the inevitability of death. The constant practicing of the philosophic method could also be seen as a sort absolute contemplation of the meaning and inviolability of death, or the constant practice of death as one contemplates the experience as a backdrop to other issues.
