494.94 + 21% means a total of 598.88
494.94 - 21% =the bill was 391
though you do realise vat is 17.5%
494.94 - 17.5% = bill was 408.3
494.94 + 17.5% = 581.55

if your total bill was £494.94 then
494.94/121=4.09
4.09*100=409.04
494.94-409.04= 85.90
VAT paid at 21% = £85.90.
