Cockers are prone to skin disorders and many more problems they peeing and pooing submissively, ear infections eye infections. Some other dogs do the same things but not as bad as cockers do. You can get a medicated shampoo for the skin it helps with the itching, it's got a tar in it, DO NOT use the shampoo on the head if you are bathing the pooch your self leave it on the body for like two to three mins if possible if the pooch won't stay still for that long just try to massage it in while you are waiting it feels good to the dog . If you are taking the pooch to the groomer ask the groomer to use the medicated shampoo. Hope this helps good luck

Skin Problems: Primary Keratinization Disorder or Primary Seborrhea

Primary seborrhea is commonly recognized in the cocker spaniel. Primary seborrhea is caused by overproduction of skin cells including sebaceous (oil) cells. The skin appears greasy and scaly with a foul smell. The trunk, back, and ears are most commonly affected. Itching varies among those affected. Diagnosis is done by biopsy. Treatment includes the administration of retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) such as isotretinoin. Concurrent treatment with antifungals may be indicated as primary seborrhea may be associated with yeast infection. Routine use of antiseborrheic shampoos and moisturizers is also recommended

Skin Problems: Food Allergies

Studies have shown the American cocker spaniel is at risk for developing food allergies. A food allergy is a result of the immune system responding to certain foods. The most likely symptoms of a food allergy are itching in the ears in feet. A closer inspection will reveal reddened and swollen skin in the affected areas. The affected areas may appear bumpy and feel hot. To a varying degree, the dog may experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms as well such as fecal mucus, fecal blood, and frequent stools; all symptoms of colitis. It may be possible for the dog to act weakly as well. The diagnosis of food allergies is done by the elimination diet. During the elimination diet the dog is fed one starch and one protein (i.e. pork and potatoes). After about 8-12 weeks of this diet, in the absence of allergy symptoms, different foods are introduced one by one to see if an allergic reaction occurs. Each new food introduced into the diet is trialed for about 1-2 weeks. If no allergy occurs another food will be added to the diet. The most common cause of food allergies in dogs are beef, chicken, milk, eggs, corn, wheat, and soy. Once the offending food is identified it can be avoided the dog's diet.

Any dog can have skin problems. They are usually food related. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. I've had three without problems. A good balanced diet, cleanliness and attention to things like ear canker are essential. Apart from the ears they are not that much different to other breeds.

The American and English mainly differ in size. The problems described above are mainly due to close breeding, not any other genetic issues. One of mine was bred with an American example, he was still bigger that the English standard and sadly not very bright, but thats expected I guess :-)

Yes, they are very susceptible to dry skin. Make sure the dog has fish oil or olive oil added to the food. They can also have odor, discoloration and yeast infections in the ears and folds near the eyes from tearing.

no they dont. But if you have fleas then the fleas could hurt them badly and cause multiple wounds on their bodies.
