Because we are lazy, waste lot of time, we do not think hard and for long time, we use our brain for unpurposeful things, we do not concentrate on one thing for long time, we cheat ourselves and others, and we do not want to excel in any field.
To excel in any field you need Interest over that field you need the Zeal to do that.
Indians are most capable but need to look upon the things i told in the first paragraph.

I wouldn't say INDIA is lacking in every field. There are fields in which India does lack pretty badly but then there are fields in which Indians have received the highest accolades possible. The main reason that i believe makes us lack in certain fields is the lack of initiative among the masses. Majority of the people believe in thinking, talking, criticising rather than taking a formidable step in the right direction.
Sometimes the least that is required is the first step ... the others are bound to follow.

Pl. be corrected. We are NOT lacking in EVERY field. This is ia very irresposible statement. We are up in so many fields-economy, healthcare, manpower, and above all, we are the largest and most stable democracy in the world.
Yes we lack in equal distribution of our bounties, we are too many hence we have rampant corruption.
I have gone round the world since 1968 and have studied other countries vis a vis India. I am proud to say we are much much better today. The drawbacks will go away - I presume in another 20 years which is not a big time for a country.

seriously...a very good question.
you guys are smart enough. motivated, industrious.
things are coming along there in india.
this is what i see as a lightweight media junkie US citizen.
perhaps it has something to do with foreign influence, history and power. culture.
everything has an influence to the big picture. a deeply spiritual lifestyle might involve taboos or mindsets that are not industrially motivated.
what is it in history that would paint the picture for a typical indian person in an area of great potential. how or why would it go unrealized. I think unless you really study the culture very hard in every aspect and every major change or establishment maybe its hard to put yourself into the shoes of someone that was there even two or three generations before you to say for certain.
India has the potential to be a massively influencial powerhouse, but per capita for the population is rather weak.
India has turned a corner recently. So to recant is almost useless. So in an odd sense I almost disagree with your question. As the direction is clearly positive. Lacking behind at 200kph in a 150kph race.
Just a thought...maybe those with the capacity to seek a higher education or become suave in the ways of the rest of the world tend to seek out those destinations to do best for themselves and do not reinvest to the homeland without apparent advantage. Maybe this is a story that could be assigned to some.

Well India as it is , is a nation of people of varying mixtures and proportions.first of all the lack of disunity has kept true talent at bay.besides the political disruptions throughout the country have neither influenced our economical or infrastructural conditions which we can see in abundance in places like malaysia(even through their varying ethnicities).
however as the cast in RDB suggested we must encourage the youth to take a step forward so as to oppose the long standing orhtodox politicians to build a better india where the demands are promptly met , so that the country may excel in every field.

while that is a generic statement, it is true in certain respects... economically, India has very poor infrastructure and people don't even have the basics. so whether it is industry or services, without infrastructure there's no opportunity for growth.
otherwise, the people generally have an apathetic attitude towards everything, that is even when they know something is wrong, people don't speak out against it... unless that changes India can't really progress

Please do not generalise . We are
1) good at many things
2) average in some and 3) bad in some fields.
While I agree that We could have done a lot better.
BUT I SEE A CHANGING INDIA IN THE LAST SIX YEARS
OR SO AND I PREDICT ( MARK MY WORDS) WE WILL
BE ON TOP OF THE WORLD IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS
