I think the first step to winning any engagement we enter is to take every soldier the rank of general or higher and force instant retirement on them. They are all politicos and stratigically fighting past wars not the current ones.
Next promote the next batch of generals by ability. Allow them to drag Rumsfield out to the front lines and make HIM walk patrol until he figures out how stupid patrols are in a place like Iraq.
We already have the troops. We have the technology. This shouldn't be a contest. We have good soldiers there. I bet if you talked to the guys on the front line they'd have some really good ideas about how to deal with the situation. Not the brass, the guys who are in the trenches. The brass today are picked for book smarts not leadership, not military ability. We have adopted much the same officer system that haunts the UK but without the enabled NCO core which saves the UK armies time and time again.
Next close the borders. Anything crosses them gets blown up. No exceptions. If it moves and it's bigger than a cat and crosses the border it dies. Easy enough to do with current technology. Monitor every road and track the insurgent ants back to their ant hills. If we don't already have a stationary sattalite we put one there. Watch every minute. That would soon leave the insurgents only able to move on cloudy days.
When we catch insurgents we withold the bodies for days. Put them on display even. Then put pig parts in them and bury them ourselves. This means no heaven for insurgents. They go strait to hell according to their beliefs. Lets see how many still want to fight if there's no heaven for their actions?
We make it clear that we get 3 months for example of no major insurgent activity that we then leave the country. That should dampen attacks considerably. Any insurgent that attacks would be actually fighting to keep the US in Iraq and it would be rather easy to make that painfully obvious to the Iraqi people who will cease to hide and support these guys as they would exposed as hyprocrites and liars.
The Iraqi Gov is hopelessly comprimised and corrupt. They are behind some of the violence going on and are using the US as a shield to commit mild acts of genocidal revenge. Some of it is likely necessary. The most militant Sunni's must be killed for the Shiites to stay in power without a major bloodbath that drags in half the Muslim world.
Next if the Turks do not want a Kurdish homeland then they can supply troops. No Turkish troops then Kurdistan comes into existence in Northern Iraq. The Turks can patrol the streets. Iraqis will react better to them and Turks will do a better job of finding insurgents as they are close in culture and better accepted by the people. Turkey and Iran are not great buds so the Turks will also be better at combating Iranian influence. If it all goes wrong the world can blame the Turks instead of us.
We can then concentrate on places that more urgently need US involvement like Iran, North Korea and Africa. Though a success in Iraq will greatly reduce the need and likelyhood that we ever have to deploy a single soldier in those nations. Failure in Iraq means war with Iran. It also encourages an already aggressive China who is looking for the right time to invade Taiwan.
As for terrorism. Iraq has little to do with it except attracting would be terrorists and keeping them busy blowing up Arabs instead of Westerners.
Our failures in Iraq are many. Tactically we are fighting the war like we did Nam and Korea with tactics that were eventually abandoned in WW II. To succeed in modern warfare we need to fight it like a modern war.
The core ideas expressed by Rumsfield and Bush are impractical. They want to repaint rotten wood. Sure it looks nice for a week then it falls apart because you didn't replace the rotted wood before painting it. There is nothing we can do to "succeed" in their eyes since they are attempting the impossible. You cannot wish away the corruption and hate. Until you channel that into constructive outlets you cannot have a stable democracy in Iraq. Democracy is poisoned by corruption. Democracy needs the soil of a motivated and idealistic people to survive. The minute the people quit watching power mongers sneak and steal freedom from the people. Our last 3 presidents and all the current showcased presidential cantidates are great examples of what happens when Democracy decays and freedom is lost. Yet these thieves who've had power in the US seem almost honest compared to what's in power in Iraq right now.

I think the American troops should pull out. I think where the problem lies in our country is from childhood. We are taught from a very young age to win. Some of us grow into adulthood believing that is that only way. I would not look at pulling out all the troops in Iraq as a lose. What was our objective to be there in the first place. I wont go into all the lies for the reason the troops were sent because we all know them. But that said we did rid the country of a dictator which was good although I do believe once we do pull out another dictator will take his place. But that is the people of Iraqs choice not ours to make. So in my opinion the US troops should pull out and let this country have the kind of goverment they choose and I also think that our country along with the rest of the world should help with the cost of rebuilding Iraq. The Middle East has very different ways than the rest of the world and if they want to continue with the warlords fighting then that is the fate they choose for themselves. But aid does need to be given to those who want to leave the country and live in a more peaceful enviroment. Anyone who answers this question saying that Iraq attacked us on 9-11 is ignorant and should really read something before they make themselves even more stupid than they appear to be now.

The troops will be pulled out of Iraq in 2010. He said in the campaign that he would withdraw the troops in 16 months. He changed that to 19 months because he said it is more viable that way.

I want our troops home. My daughter is in the army in Korea and could easily be called to Iraq.
However, tactically, we should have done the troop surge a long time ago. We made a commitment to the people and legally elected government of Iraq that we can't just walk away from. To fulfill that commitment requires the troop surge. It should have happened long ago but politics kept it from happening. Let's do it, get it over with and bring our troops home with a job well finished for a change instead of backing out on another promise.

Pull them out now! Bush is incapable off winning his war. No one wanted this war except for the neo-conservatives that have taken over the Republican party. And even many of them have enough brains to know that nothing about this war has been handled honestly or correctly. Reinforcements are nothing but more targets so Bush can cry as he is handing out more medals. Like he gives a sh!t.

I believe we need to get out and that we should never have been there in the first place. First, NO weapons of mass destruction were found, Bin Ladden was never there, Hussein was not 9/11 mastermind, and we have enough problems here at home in our own damn country.

Did we happen to forget that THEY ATTACKED US!!! We went in for a darned good reason and that's why we are still there. I, too, have family in the military who have been/are there. They know what they are fighting for, and the majority of them will tell you that we are winning this war, that we are making a difference. Don't ask the media, they just love to portray horrible and evil things. Ask a soldier, sailor, marine, etc the next time you see one.
