Puppy Carriers
If you have a toy sized puppy or dog, you might want to consider toting him around in a dog carrier. There are a wide variety of options available. You can choose from tote carriers, slings, pet pouches, and even canine strollers. If you decide to put your dog in a carrier, choose something that is suitable for his weight and well ventilated to keep him cool. -

Only grab a pup by the scruff while lifting. The proper way to hold a pup for carrying is to lay it on your forearm, with your hand cradling under its chest . Almost like you scooped it with your arm from behind. Both front and back legs hanging over each side of your arm. Then you have more control and you can bring your arm in front of you securely against your body. At least that is how I was taught and every breeder I know. However, some are right if you are just lifting to crate or put in the car you , just lift by the scruff. Pups don't like to dangle for long.

If he is small, to pick him up by the scruff of the neck briefly is the best - it is after all the way his mother does.
When you have picked him up place him as close to your chest as possible facing left (he will like to hear and feel your heart beat.) have your left hand under his tail (which should be tucked under him) and your right hand still holding the scruff or along his body and keeping your right hand on his shoulder to prevent his escape and your dropping him. This way you have control and the puppy feels safe and secure.
One thing that really bugs me is seeing people picking up or carrying dogs and cats under their tummies. Tummies and internal organs are very vulnerable. Just think what it would feel like if someone did that you you -especially after you have just had a meal!

Carry the puppy against your chest, laying along your forearm like he's laying on his belly.
Very comfortable for the pup. :)

I find it most comfortable to wrap my puppy, Gingercud, in a blanket or towel, almost like swaddling clothes for an infant. Then we usually treat him to his "bah-bah".
