Pain and stiffness; acute and loud "creaking" and "cracking" sounds as joints rub together without the cushioning effect of the stuff that's supposed to be there (forget the name!) accompanied by excruciating pain whenever you try to move. If in the knees or hips then pain will be worse when in the act of moving from sitting to standing (and v/v) positions although not too bad whilst actually sitting if the height is comfortable. Standing and walking will also be painful and at worst almost impossible without artificial aids like a walking frame or crutches/sticks.

arthritis is specifically related to the joints (writs, ankles, knees, etc). You will have pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints, and therefore you will find it difficult to move the affected areas. If it is only minor arthritis, you can help control it with Aleve and a warm, moist compress. If it is severe, there are several prescription medications you can get from your doctor.
