The bible makes it clear that he chose us... We seek him because of the calling of the holy spirit.. Examples (Romans 10:20, John 15:16, 1Thessolonians1:4,5, IIThesolonians 2:13-14, Ephesians 1:4) I do not believe that we have to be called by God to be aware of Him. The bible says that the demons believe in God and tremble. In other words they are aware of Him and have not been called. I personally know many people that are aware of the Lord that are not saved.I do believe however that we have to be called by the Lord before we will accept Him

If you're looking to the bible for an answer, you'll get nowhere, because much like Newton's third law, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So anything can be justified or indeed denied by verses from the bible.
And if any of you don't agree with that, save your words because I won't be coming back to this question...
(not denying Newton, I just won't be here to see the reaction)

Go within and meet God.What Paul said was his own assumption as to what happened. This is not written in stone.
Jesus taught of personal experience in doing the will of God,and serving the human brotherhood.
Paul founded a religion in which Jesus became the object of worship, and the brotherhood consisted of fellow believers in the divine Christ. Now you see the difference.

If we all had to be called, no one would hear. I presume you are a Christan? if so, then you will probably accept that all things are of God and from God? That being so, there is no part of you, or anything else, that is not of God. So why are you wondering about being called or chosen? You are already there, already Chosen, all you have to do is stop wondering and start listening.
Sit in a quiet place, allow your mind to be quiet too. Stop thinking. Just sit. Just listen. Be well!

Belief is a good place to begin.
To be aware one must look and practise the art of looking until they are aware. For some, the awareness is profound, and for others it progresses slowly.
Some seek and some are called.

We have to be called by God but the way we know we're being called and made aware by him is because we have the desire.

if you are having your dinner
do you have desire to hunger to eat before you seek food
certainly the desire gives reason to listen ,by listening with desire to know god you in time know his voice ,just as the beast in the barn knows the voice of his sheppard.

god has given us freewill ,his still soft voice so easly is overwelmed by even our thought ,you first must of frewill feel the thirst ,feel the hunger ,want to ,need to ,many are called so few hear.
but your free to choose.

Paul I feel is saying he was called for to do those writings with divine inspiration. If you read about the holy ghost it states it communicates to you so you can understand. Now as you asked yes I feel you must seek to find.

If and when God has a mission for you, He can get to You by any means. you might be called by God even when you do not have the desire. But the desire to serve God can equally hasten his revelation to you and help your knowledge of Him through his word.

God's heart is for all to know Him. So everyone is called.

Most people responded by first having a desire. They seek and they find. They knock and the door is open to them.

Shalom.
