In the beginning, all pots and plates were "thrown" on a potter's wheel. And round is what you get from a potter's wheel.
And since round was easy to stir and nobody felt they could improve on the original design, we have round today as well.

It would be hard to get to the food if it gets stuck in the corners. You can't stir consistently if the food is in the corners! ;)
