I believe it is one day per year that you have to stay in the UK for various government departments - but that depends what you want to do? Remain a British citizen? Not pay UK taxes? Qualify for NHS treatment? Qualify for a pension?

You can live ourseas as long as you want, as nothing changes the fact that you're British. I'm a British national, but retired to a country outside the UK and the EU. When my passport expired, I simply applied to the local British Consulate for a new one, which I duly received. In this country, it's more a question of how long the authorities will allow you to stay, and the max for someone without this country's citizenship, is 3 months.

You can be out of the country as long as you want - its more a case of how long you are able to stay in another country, and that depends on their policy on visas. You should be able to gain entry to most countries with a British passport on a tourist visa - which varies from country to country but usually lasts about 3 months.

As long as you like. As other answerers have said, there are tax implications, your pension might be affected and the countries you visit will each have their own requirements. But the British Government are not your parents, they cannot order you to be home at a certain time !
