Hicups are caused by Spasms in the Diaphram.

How to get rid of them - not a clue maybe try one of the many old wives tales and theories that you hear.

They are caused by spasms an the diaphram.

You need to regain control of it. Try this:
Relax and stop thinking about the hickups. Instead try to remember what you had to eat on Thursday. You must think really hard for this to work. If you already know, try another day but you must be thinking of something completely different to the hickups, relax and concentrate.

From 'New Scientist', October '06 - the edition with yellow cover, monkey on the front. Second last page. This is absolutely true:
"100% guaranteed cure for hicccups - digital, rectal massage"
How they found out, I don't know, and I'm curious to know what other things they tried before they got there.

Sipping water out of the far side of a glass gets rid of hiccups quite quickly.

Air gets trapped between the diaphram muscles and you hick up. So..you want to squeeze your muscles back together to force the air out. Take a very deep breath with your mouth open. Slowly blow that breath out of your mouth imagining that you are pushing the diaphram muscles together. You want to blow all that air out. When you take your normal breath, do so slowly and through your nose.

Drinking water is the best way for me to get rid of hiccups.

They occur because your diaphragm is tired. Therefore, holding your breath is the best method to give it a little rest and make them stop.

If you can't just hold your breath in your mouth, try drinking an entire glass of water in one go.

it is when this lining of muscle underneath your lungs called the diaphram goes into a spasm(cant remember what causes this) and when in a spasm it pushes onto your lungs from time to time, which forces out air, which makes you hiccup.
