From time immemorial it would appear that names were chosen with some significance ( as soon as they realized that names could be mportant). Many were related to your status or roots.
Today it's all different. There is hardly any distinction between a first or a last name. In some societies family or surnames still play a significant role. Smoe common Indian Surnames like Dhillon, Gill (Gilles in French), Virdi ( Verde in Italian), Airen, Shah or Shaw etc. are still in very common use.
But today some tradenames are slowly changing - Carpenter ( Charpentier in French ), Balcksmith, Goldsmith, Shoemaker ( is some times written Schumaker or Schumacher ), Greenwood ( Boisvert ).
You can say what's in a name or you can say a name can define your entire personality and outlook and it's with you for your lifetime and does not change with the seasons or ups or downs of life.
Perhaps its the reason some parents do spend a little time in choosing an appropriate name for their child.

Mixing European and non-European names is really common nowadays and it's no big deal. It will definitely become more common in the future as the number of multiethnic people increases. I know of a few Indian folks with English firstnames and indian last names. Also a lot of Asian people in general. So don't worry about it, it's a fine sounding name and makes you unique.

Why not, we have "Soledad O'Brian" doing the news in NY, she looks about as "IRISH" as "ARRAFAT" does ! Why don't you just go with "SMITTY", it's easier to remember for YOU, and for EVERYONE ELSE ! if you have to keep repeating a funny name that nobody can remember, you will be given a nick name that you don't like, we had a guy like that at work, he got the nick name of "SCHMOLTZ" which I think is Yiddish meaning a kosher food made from chicken fat, anyway, he hated it but, this is NY, and it stuck. I used to be fat, now I'm skinny, so my name at work is "BONES", it does'nt bother me because, it's better than being called "FAT".
