I had a really terrible surname but I changed it completely by changing just one letter. As an example and it isn't mine, take the name GLASSCOCK. This was the surname of a friend of many years ago. She changed it by leaving out the C and it became GLASSOCK. Such a big change for the sake of one letter. She started to call herself by that name and over a very short time that was how people knew her. Perhaps you can do the same. You then only need to tell all authorities of the change and that is all you need to do. To avoid future problems you can change by Deed Poll which is easy and does not cost a great deal. I would like to be known as Peterson.

I'm sorry, but I didn't catch the name. What was it again? Mine is Zelhart. It is pronounced phonetically and spelled just that way and I still have to spell it EVERY time. Unless you are from some strange part of the world where using vowels in a name, or putting groups of letters in unpronounceable combinations you probably don't have too bad a name. Of course, if it's Clinton, or Bin Laden, or even Hitler, then you might have a problem.

First of all, it's "surname" not "sir name".
Second of all, be proud of your surname. It's your FAMILY we're talking about here. Your ancestors, the people who made it possible for you to be alive and have the type of life that you're living. Be proud of your family because if you reject them, you'll have nothing.
I've gone some really tough times in my past and although others abandoned me, my family never did. They helped me get through it and to improve my life.
So it sounds weird. So what? It makes you UNIQUE. People will remember you. Also, people who change their surnames (other than for marriage) are seen as kind of weird.
Actors and musicians who "change" their names really don't: They just use "stage names" (or "pen names for writers) that they only use for their work. Their real surnames stay the same.
