Buddha: "If there ever comes a day where I stand between you and the truth, kill me and get me out of the way, so you can reach the truth"

What does that mean? Or was it just a spiritual precaution?

Keep searching for the truth no matter what the cost. A good place to start is the bible, as every other religion is false.

It is said that Shakyamuni's last dying words to his disciples were, "Be a lamp unto yourselves." Be your own light, your own authority, your own Buddha. Kill off every image of the Buddha, see who and what you are in this very moment, see that there is no Buddha other than THIS MOMENT.

This admonition points up the fact that no meaning that comes from outside of ourselves is real!
The "Buddhahood" of each of us has already been obtained. We need only recognize it!
Philosophy, religion, patriotism, all are empty idols. The only meaning in our lives is what we each bring to them.
Killing the Buddha on the road means destroying the hope that anything outside of ourselves can be our master!
We must each give up the Master, without giving up the search for TRUTH!

Where are you quoting that from? What is your source? I do not believe Buddha said that.
The meaning is obvious. but the way you are saying it is not how Buddha says things.

my teacher often says: "don't look at the guru/teacher, look where the guru/teacher is pointing."

Don't follow Buddhism because of the Buddha, follow it because it is your truth. And the same for all other religions.

He meant that Truth is more important than life itself, even his. For without truth there is no purpose to living and life.
