I am going to guess wildly and suggest that there were two young people in Iraq and they are describing what they see as the difference between their life before and after 2003.

So in 2002 they may have had an awful time but they lived as young people do.
In 2004 they were only two years older but because of what was going on around them (perhaps the death of parents?) they now lived the life of adults in respect of what they had to put up with and the responsibilities they have taken on.

Is my story even close and does it help, possibly, explain what they might be trying to say?
