What a fantastic question! I'm laughing as I'm typing.
I find my sons socks in all my clothes. In the washer dryer, they get mixed in and hide in all sorts of places. The other day I went to work and realized too late that one was in my shirt pocket!!
I agree with most here that there are supernatural forces working against us. But, its best to give in. Don't try to fight it. Just accept that those socks are gone... they've been sucked into the same vortex as the sippy cups, the post-it notes with the very important phone numbers and that gorgeous sweater that I bought for my son before he was born (back when I still had spending money.) But, no worries, they will re-appear as soon as your child outgrows them.
lol...

The best place to look is under the bed, in the cushions of the sofa, and toy boxes. And a solution for the washer and dryer eating them. I have my 3yr old safety pin her matching socks together with diaper pins, when she takes them off. Then you can throw them in the wash and dryer and you always have a pair. It works for me. I even have my husband doing it.

Oh, do i know i that problem!!! Buti have a theory - Socks and gloves are actually wild animals. When you aren't looking they make a break for freedom and escape. There are herds of wild socks, mittens etc roaming the countryside picking up those strays that have just broken free. It is the only thing that would explain how so many go missing in such a short space of time.

They have disappeared down a worm hole and are now living on a planet populated by a sock-like lifeform free from the threat of cheesey feet and tight fitting shoes. Be happy for them. They have found their Valhalla

the washing machine does eat little socks. a repair man told me that they go right under the agitator and down the drain. only way to keep this from happening is to use a hosery bag . put all the little socks in it before washing

Try within the washing and again in the washing machine, if not found then your little girl has got the same habit as my nephew. Takes off his socks...pulls them off even if it takes him an hour... and throws them as far away as he can. Usually not very far, but hes cunning enough to hide them under the seatee

Don't forget to check the garbage cans, too.
My 2 year old son has a habit of throwing things away that he doesn't like, including carrots, milk still in cups, socks, and our car keys. :)
