interval training is when there is a fixed period of exercise where you are operating at maximum effort followed by a short resting period. basically it depletes skeletal muscle of ATP, which is the cellular energy source used for muscular contractions. it has a VERY positive effect on increasing the resting metabolic rate for hours after the training session. it also has a very positive effect on the endocrine system causing growth hormone release and slightly elevated levels of androgens. which means it can cause the body to burn some serious body fat.
