If you are to the point where you sit on the toilet and are straining hard and can feel the stool trying to come out then you are past the point of stool softeners and other things helping.
What it is is that you have constipation and it has become impacted to where it is too big to pass the sphincter muscle.
The advise I am about to give you isn't a joke. It's real and the same thing a doctor will do if you go to the emergency room.
First thing you should try is an saline enema. Go to Walgreeens or some other pharmacy and get an enema. They cost a couple of dollars. Follow the direction on the box. While you are there also pick up a jar of vasoline. I know it's embarrasing but it beats having to go to the emergency room. If the impaction isn't too bad the enema will work for you and you will pass the stool. If not you will have to go to step 2. You will have to use your finger and the vasoline to reach into your rectum and break up the stool and pull some out. This is exactly what a doctor does. If you can't pass the stool within 3 days you MUST go to the doctore immediately. You can rupture your intestines and actually die.
I recommend using rubber surgical gloves which you can also buy along with the saline enema and Vasoline. If you want buy them at different locations so you don't buy it all at once and cause more embarrasment. Trim your fingernail also.
Use lots of Vasoline. You can't use too much, the more the better. Lube up your finger real good and also lube up your rectum. Sit on the toilet and strain like your are going to have a bowel movement. Then insert your finger slowly and you will clearly feel the stool. Use your finger like a hook and try to break small pieces of it off and pull it out. It may just be one impacted piece go the side that is keep the stool from coming out.
Work on it a little at a time and take breaks. Don't panic and take your time. It's very scary when you can't pass a stool. And stool softeners won't help at this point but they will help the current food being digested. If you keep pulling pieces of the stool of with your finger it will eventually come out. You can kind of feel if there are large pieces sticking out to the side stopping it from coming out. Or the whole thing may just be too big. Small pieces become packed together at the rectum when you have constipation. And the stoll can become very big. The rectum and sphincter can stretch and easily accomodate your finger working on the stool. Just have lots and lots of Vasoline and keep adding it on. I know it seems gross but it is a normal procedure for any doctor or regular health worker. And having a bad impaction can be very scary! So give it a try. Remember, try the saline enema first and follow the directions. Then go to the next step of using your finger and Vasoline to slowly work small parts of the stool out. You are basically breaking small pieces of it off until you can pass the rest. Keep trying. You may even notice small amounts of red blood because of microscopic tears in the tissue. Very small amounts of red blood look a lot bigger in the water. So don't panic if you see a little on the pieces of stool you bring out.
It's normal. If you can not pass this stool within 3 days you MUST go to the doctor immediately. DO NOT WAIT ANY LONGER BECUASE YOU CAN DIE. GO ON THE 3RD DAY TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IF YOU CAN'T GET INTO A REGULAR PHYSICIAN. They will give you an enema at the hospital and then a doctor will use his finger to pull your stool out.
Also, if you are having any abdominal pain other than normal constipation pains go to the doctor immediately!!
Good luck and stay calm. Don't be grossed out or embarrased. It's part of being a human being. There are time when a wife will have to do this for her husband or vice versa. You will feel so much better after you get this stool out. Once done make sure to eat more fiber and maybe take a stool softener on a regular basis. Or drink a few glasses or prune juice daily. If you have regular constipation problems see a doctor about it.

I have had the same diet for the past few months - taking Metamucil regularly.
The past week has been hell on wheels - I did the warm bath and held the enema for 30 mins in the bath - the enema broke up the stool then it was easier to pass but still painful rocks. (not a solid rock) I would recommend this option to anyone instead of the finger and Vaseline method.
I have stopped my THC intake as well, 3weeks ago, I guess this is when all the problems really started, my levels are gone now, I want to try to take some and see what it will do but I really don't want that in my life any more at this point.
Going to see my Dr first thing tomorrow, I am off Metamucil for the time being and I changed my diet to crap food for the last 5 days but the result is the same. If I intake any more water I might drowned or become a fish.
PITA I tell ya!

I used James m advice and worked great!!! I should add to that though! If you are at the throne and its too late to go anywhere, let alone the store to get enema you are gonna have to manually do it!!! If you don't have Vaseline try lotion or conditioner. Rub it around outside opening and you will feel it wanting to release a little. Start SLOWLY removing hard pieces. Not as gross cause they are like little rocks....... It will probably just be a little bit and then you will start to feel pressure for a normal bowel movement. Remove hand and relax, don't tense. Then it will pass, a regular stool that will not be painful at all. If you have been plugged up for a while, like days it should be very long so watch when you flush to be ready for over flooding of water. You should be in the clear and feel so much better! You will be sore and stressed but relieved. It may sound gross but its not as bad as you dread and at this point you'll do anything! So if too late..remove pebbles, voila!!!!

ok so seeing as I deal with this problem a lot I thought I would share what has worked best for me. I have tried the whole finger thing(gross I know) and although that does help I find myself still straining breathlessly with little results. if you have put your finger in there and you can feel the stool then yes you are way past laxatives and stool softeners. so the most effective, least painful solution I have found to work for me is taking some Vaseline or lotion(Vaseline is more effective) then finding a surface to put my feet on( ie tub, step stool, pile of phonebooks) to make it so that my feet are as close to my chest as possible. and although I may still have to strain a little bit it makes it very less painful to pass while putting your body in a position that makes it easier to pass hard or impacted stool.

Here is something that has worked for me like clock work. Buy some Fleet Glycerin Suppositories from the pharmacy or a grocery store and also buy some Preperation H Suppositories that have the healing aloe stuff in them. Put 1 or 2 of the fleet suppositories up there and find something to bite on for the next 15 to 30 minutes. It will feel like you have to go so bad it will almost kill you...but the active ingredient in the fleet ones breaks the stool up like nothing I have ever used. IF you can keep them in there for at least 30 minutes you will break SOME of the stool up for sure...maybe enough to get the whole thing out..maybe not. But if you keep repeating the process and putting a Preperation H one up there too...it will sooth your tears and somewhat lube the tunnel too.

Phillips Milk of Magnesia work really well for the very first onset of constipation. Everyone is different but I usually drop a Duce at least once every day when I’m normal. So if I know that it has been a day or going on two days, thats my sign that I’m starting to get backed up. If you immediately take the phillips milk of magnesia( I take a double dose ) it will work and you will pass your Duce within 1 to 2 hours painlessly. Slight diarrhea is a temporary side effect for a few hours. But I much rather run to the crapper 7 times in a night then pass a bowling bowl from my anus. good luck all. P.S., I’ve used the finger technique a few times in the past and it works. sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Thats better than pushing so hard that your rectum feels lie it flipped inside out.

I had this problem recently and I found that placing my feet on something elevated (stool, stack of phonebooks, I used a new case of toilet paper) and keeping my knees up to my chest in a sort of crouched positioned helped A LOT!
I was struggling for a while to pass stool that I was almost panicking, and thought maybe if I was in a more natural crouched position it would help. It did. As soon as I got in position and elevated my feet I was able to fully relieve myself with luckily no tears.
If anything I suggest trying this out before having to stick your fingers anywhere.

I was SO thankful to find this remedy. I didn t have any Vaseline but I cut open some flaxseed oil gel tablets & did have some disposable gloves w my painting supplies. Was so hard it was a few tries to even flush. I am 60 and have a fear of pushing too hard and being found dead from a heart attack....that s ulitmately the cause of Elvis death. Sure he took too many drugs but in the end he was over-straining on the toilet. It really is hard on your body. I have only had this one other time 27 years ago after surgery & lots of constipating pain killers.
