Some cities in America use a system for street numbers which tells you where on the street the house is positioned. This results in four and five-digit numbers. For example, your number might be 12345. This might mean that your house is number 45, and it is in the section of the street between 123rd Avenue and 124th Avenue. The exact system depends on what city you are in.

Street numbers just enable someone to locate a particular building or dwelling. If an address has more digits, then chances are good that it's simply on a long street with lots of buildings needing numbers. In most places, odd-numbered buildings are on one side of the street, even numbered ones are on the opposite side. The interval between numbers varies from street to street and from place to place.

it basically refers to the number of the lot or building along that street...each block usually begins with a diferent number...along a very long street, especially in large cities they have so many blocks that the numbers get really high... i grew up in a large city and my addy had 4 digits, now im in a small "town" and i only have 3 digits

Numbers typically are made up of rough estimate distances from a central point or between numbered blocks. Even numbers are typically on ones side of a street and odd ones on the opposite.
