Rank does not matter. It is just a method of organizing people within a school.

I study a traditional style and it is very much against etiquette to ask about or reveal your rank outside of the organization as that is not what the arts are about.
It is about improving yourself as much as you can, it is not about achieving or discussing rank.

I tend to notice ego follows rank.

Sorry no offense but these are my thoughts.

Still studying other arts and owner of a very humble school. But my favorite lessons have come when I was a bouncer and in my last 6 years as a lae enforcement agent. To all my fellow practitioners here, I thank you for taking time to answer questions. I know sometimes we disagree but I got to say that I respect all of you.

Tae Kwon Do
Kyukido
Aikido
Brown in Kempo

Belts often mean little of anything however. I've seen people with six months training that were a terror and black belts that couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag.

Still as Americans we have like to have some way of measuring out progress and the belt system provide that to a degree. But since martial arts schools are a business a lot schools are all but forced to promote people who shouldn't be promoted in order just to stay in business. Better established schools can afford to only promote those who deserve it but sometimes they are more interested in the money than in producing quality students. I dislike the McDojo and really do appreciate schools that are more demanding.

let me see iv'e got some fan belts, air con.belts, power steering belts,a spare drive belt for my harley 2 or 3 to hold up my levis there all black do they count? no?
i also have a cupboard full of belts and sashes of all different colours mainly black with stripes or blood tags and the gi's that go with them, and thai shorts and singlets.and there all earnt the hard way.but i'm not here to compete against anyone as to who holds the highest rank or who has the most belts in different styles.what i will say though is that i have black belts in more than 1 style of karate and other ma and i'm a 4th degree in thai and have been honored by my students to have them call me by my given titles. dai sensei, kru or sifu.and i consider it an honor because i dont expect my students to call me any of them unless they think i deserve it.

'Black Belter' sounds so cheap. The color of your belt doesn't determine your skill or knowledge. I worked too long and hard to be lumped in with a bunch of 'Mc. Blackbelts'.

No disrespect to those who have paid their dues. The others know who they are.

I have a black belt in TKD.

I have a green sash in Kung Fu.

It was more difficult to get the first sash in Kung Fu than the black belt in TKD (unless you count the annoying B.S.)
