A very old man in a nursing home is talking to a friend, and he makes this
statment:

I have a daughter named Lucy, and she's very dear to me.
Not only is she my daughter, but she's my granddaughter, you see.
There's one other thing that I must confess to you.
She's also my great grand-daughter, and I swear that this is true.
Yes, Lucy is all three things, and not just "by marriage" or "figuritively".
I mean by blood relation... although you may now think less of me.

Is it possible that this man's claim is entirely true? If so, please explain
how it could be so.

BTW I already know the answer. This is just a challenge to see if anyone else can get it : )

Nope. It is not 3 different people named Lucy. (like i'd make it so easy!) Lucy is just one person who fits all 3 roles.

So far.. sportswriter is closest to the correct answer but still not quite there. There is only ONE person named Lucy in this scenario, and she is, in fact, all three things.

Well, It is a Good Question!
I will try to answer it in 3 steps
1. M(Old Man) Married a lady say L1 who gave birth to L2
2. M(Old Man) Married L2(her daughter) who gave birth to L3
3. M(Old Man) Married L3(her daughter and granddaughter) who gave birth to Lucy.
So, By 3 Lucy is M's Daughter
By 2 Lucy is M's Grand Daughter
By 1 Lucy is M's Great Grand Daughter.

All is blood Relationship and she is the same Person !
I don't think any person will do this practically but this situation makes a good Question/Puzzle!

Actually, it's quite simple.. though the incest is a bit extreme.

The old man had relations with his daughter, and produced a daughter who was also a granddaughter. He then had relations with the granddaughter and had a daughter who then would be his daughter, his granddaughter from his second daughter, and his great granddaughter as far as his first daughter would be concerned.

Same ol' song!!! (<;

"I'M MY OWN GRANDPA"

Many, many years ago when I was just twenty-three,
I was married to a widow, she was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red
And my father fell in Love with her. Soon they too were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law--changed my very life!
My daughter was my mother because she was my father's wife!
To complicate the matter even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby he then became a brother-in-law to Dad.
Well, that made him my uncle--made me very sad!
Because if he was my uncle then he also was a brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother.
CHORUS
My father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run.
And, of course, he became my grandchild because he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother and this makes me blue
Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too!
CHORUS
Now if my wife is my grandmother, well, then I am her grandchild,
And every time that I think about this, it nearly drives me wild!
Because now I have become the strangest case that you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother, I’m my own grandpa!
CHORUS:
I'm my own grandpa! I'm my own grandpa!
It sounds funny, I know, but it really is so!
Oh, I'm my own grandpa!

He had sex with his grandaughter and produced Lucy. That would obviously make Lucy his daughter, and as his grandaughter had a daughter called Lucy, he'd be her great grandfather. And as his grandaughter is his daughter's daughter, for him him to be a grandfather, he must also be his grandaughter's father, making the presumption that he had sex with her mother (his daughter). Ummm, methinks they either are from Tasmania or members of the English Royal Family with all this inbreeding.

ok. old man married LADY1
produced LADY2
..married LADY2
produced LADY3
married LADY3
produced lucy..
so the link as seen that LADY1 was his wife, and lucy was LADY1's great grnd child.. it is the oldman's too..
and since LADY2 is his wife as well and lucy was LADY2's granddaughter, she was the oldman's as well..
and the oldman married and had sex wit his granddaughter(LADY3) lady3's daughter is lucy and so she is the old man's as well!! so lucy is his daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter!!!! AM I RIGHT???!!!

If I were Lucy, then this man would have had to sleep with my mother for me to be his daughter, my grandmother for me to be his grand daughter, and my great grandmother for me to be his great grand daughter.

lol... is this right??
