My boyfriend took a call from me when he was over at his friend's house (a guy). He was really short and said he would talk to me tomorrow. When I told him I wanted to talk, and mentioned that he often takes calls when he is visiting me, he got an attitude with me. I felt like he was trying to impress his friend with his way he was speaking to me. He said something like, "I talk to who I want, when I want." in a rude tone of voice.

Because I was mad, I snapped and said, "You sound like a real man--I bet your boyfriend is impressed!" and then I hung up. I immediately realized how stupid my comment was and felt embarrassed. About 30 minutes later he called to ask why I said it.

I said I was frustrated and got emotional. He said he couldn't understand that. I really couldn't explain my emotions, it was just the way I felt, and I felt justified in feeling mad, just not in making that comment and hanging up.

Yes, you need to apologize, but you also need to make it clear to him that there was a reason for you getting mad, and what that reason is. And be prepared to admit you may have been wrong in the first place about demanding to talk right then.

Real relationships are about more than power and manipulation.

I gather from what you said and the speed with which you got angry, there are other problems. What did you have to talk to him about that couldn't wait? Were you angry because you were jealous because he was spending time with a male buddy and not you; so you feel as if you can intrude whenever you like...and he should drop everything? Granted, cellular calls can be annoying, but you going ballistic because he tells you he will talk a little later is nuts. Next time wait until you see him face-to-face and ask what he was doing that was so important he couldn't spare 5 minutes of his time. And discuss it, don't let it get out of hand...

What you said was silly, but what he said was rude.

If the relationship is important to you, apologize. Explain to him that his comment hurt your feelings, and you think he owes you an apology as well.
