How do you relieve skin irritation after touching a habanero pepper? I chopped 6 of them for salsa, along with 4 green jalapenos & 3 red jalapenos, instead of using a utensil to pick up the chopped peppers I scooped them up with my left hand (not thinking about the capsasin {sp?} getting on my skin).... Now my left hand is burning like fire and this was over 7 hours ago. What can I do to stop the burning, if anything?

Rinse your hand in milk as it will neutralize the acid in the capsacin. Rinsing in water won't help because the capsacin is oil based.

Try washing your hands in alcohol a couple of times. That should help. You can also try milk, honey, and/or a paste of baking soda. It will go away in time, but you will have some residual for a long time. Be careful not to rub mucous membranes, or especially your eyes or genitals with that hand!

food like milk and bread help to quell the spiciness in your mouth after eating spicy food containing substances like capsaicin contained in most peppers(causes the spiciness), by acting on the capsaicin, so it should help with capsaicin contact on the skin too.
