Since you asked specifically about double barrels.......
There are quite a few good ones on the market. If you want to spend a lot of money any of the Browning Citori guns are excellent. For a more economical gun the new SPR310 over/under by Remington is a nice gun.
I have an American Arms Silver Lite 12 ga. that fits me perfectly, consistently shoots well, and just feels "right". I picked it up about 11 years ago and like it just as much now as when I bought it.
Try going to a gun shop or sporting goods store, throw a few different models up to your shoulder, and see what feels best to you.

Over-and-under or side-by-side? My favorite is an old L.C.Smith. My little brother likes his Greener. Neither is currently manufactured, but there are plenty on the used gun market. Of the new side-by-sides, the imports from Spain seem to be the best bargain if you're on a budget. Shopping is as much fun as getting, so just go browsing.
Most of the major makers offer over-and-unders. I had a Browning Citori that I eventually handed down to one of my children. Again, shop around and see what you like.

there is a real good shotgun made by benelli, its called a superblack eagle II. its an automatic and very light. it shoots up to 3 and a half inch shells. its pricey at about 1200 dollars but its well worth the cost you will never want to buy or shoot another shotgun

I just love exposed hammers on a side by side. The double triggers make "both barrels" shots fun, too! ;)
