Could you please try to examine the pros and cons of both a religious world, with its inherent disputes and conflicts, and irreligious world.

Important in your considerations would be whether religious belief is required for good morals and behaviour to exist. Which way you view that will be central, I believe, to your answer to the question.

Thanks again.
J

Morals cannot and must not be made dependent on a religion - any religion, because that would imply automatically that a loss of faith invalidates the whole moral code of law. This is a danger, and a price that as a society we cannot pay.

China has never had a religion based on a God - interesting case. Bouddhism is based on faith on the human, in the human mind and in the possibility of the human understanding and growth, there is no trascendance there. During the revolution year, that part has been replaced by a doctrine - the communist one, but now is fast coming back to traditional approach.

For the rest, dear J, I think you should develop your own homework by yourself...

Well, there would be half as many wars, less murder, less prejudice, less hatred, more love, more acceptance, and more individuality.
Why didn't people think of this before? Oh wait, they did!

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Sorry this is so long. I got carried away.

I don't think it would be. After all, belonging to a religion, whether it's mainstream or not, does many things for people: teaches morals, gives a community where you will be accepted simply because you believe, and helps develop the spiritual part of a person, which I believe is a necessary part of growth, no matter what form that spirituality takes. I am Jewish, and being Jewish is a part of me. I also have looked into Chinese medicine and chi stuff, and I feel that is also a good way to look for spirituality.

Yes, religion does have its cons. Namely, its extremists. No matter what religion you go to, the extremists are there, saying that the right path is their path. Muslim terrorists, Christian Fundamentalists, Jewish ultra-Orthodox. These people cause hate and war, but it is not the religion that causes these extremists to arise. If they were brought up in a world with no religion, these people would still hate. That's just who they are.

A world without religion could still teach morals. I will not argue against that point. I have plenty of non-religious friends who are good, moral people. A world without religion would probably still have communities like a church, synagogue, or mosque does. After all, there are plenty of clubs at public schools - what if there were just clubs when we reached adulthood?

However, a world without religion of any sort could not provide a place for spiritual growth. Look at all sorts of good, famous people. Martin Luther King, Jr. for instance. After all, it is his weekend in the US. He was a preacher. Gandhi was a faithful Hindu. Mother Teresa - Catholic. The founding fathers of the United States - good, God-fearing Christian men. Florence Nightingale. Harriet Tubman. Abraham Lincoln. All these people were religious, and believing in a religion made them who they were. Without their religion, they would not have had an avenue in which to develop their spiritual side. Without their indomitable spirit, they would not have been the persistent, overall good people that they were.

Without religion, what is there to hope for? That pure chance created random strands of RNA in a bunch of lava that just happened to come together so perfectly as to create a living organism, albeit made of one cell? That blind fate pushed that first fish out of the water? That an incidental instinct just told that first ape to throw a rock at something instead of hitting it with his hands? Or to walk on two legs instead of four? That there is nothing waiting for us, no one out there to look to, to say, "Why am I here? What is the meaning of life?"

Just in case there are other people reading this, I'll sum this whole mini-essay into a paragraph. Religion teaches many things, most of which can be covered by secular teachings, but religion is the most efficient avenue for developing a spirit, which I believe is essential for human beings to be good. It also puts a little light at the end of this bleak tunnel, some hope that maybe there's someone else out there to give us something better than this life.

Just maybe.

properly it actual relies upon on the which skill. we are meant to do faith, be non secular, that's to revere and worship God with our hearts, minds and acts. Being the know-how in our hearts the character of our understanding of God's love and could. The word of God is know-how, Jesus is the word of God, being humble like he replace into is having the word of God. there are various different components that deliver chaos additionally, like see as an occasion the ideologies (human beings kills for politics), the separation of instructions (brings revolts and revolutions), racism, monopolism, mafia, curroption in all senses, liberalism, loss of ethical values, financial injustice, social injustice. See as an occasion the way it is going: we've Monarchy .....then we would decide to overthrow the kings because of the fact they're undesirable and make a republic. we've a republic....then we comprehend that 4 years will possibly not be sufficient or human beings purely decide to stay in capacity by cheating and violence. we've a republic.....then we would like a union, yet many don't choose a union so we would desire to combat lower back. there are lots of people who evaluate they're at peace purely because of the fact they don't comprehend the actuality that they are purely being brainwashed into living a life-time of conformism, abstracted from the undeniable fact that whilst he's working 2 jobs to maintain a kin, the prosperous is taking part in golfing with the made of his sweat. that once that's spoken some united states's financial stability the figures do not contain the various empty tables interior the ghettos.

Well, according to the popular television show South Park, even if we were all atheists, we would go to war over the name of our Atheist organization. There is no doubt that religion is responsible for more death, destruction, pain, suffering and IGNORANCE than all other sources combined. That said, I don't think that these things are inherent to religion. It is theoretically possible for religion to exist without all this harm, but it just doesn't happen in our world. If people could really accept that there is no real truth as far as god goes, then they could accept everyone's religion(s). As it is now, we just kill everyone who doesn't agree.

i think religions skew the real reasons for ethics and have an immediate bad effect on people's morals. also, over time it could be hoped that evolution or the intelligently guided 'breeding' of people could close the gap if some people turn out to need a religion to scare them into behaving ethically.

your first line i think is the more important effect; no religion, no religious wars.

of course, one's definition of 'religion' has dramatic implications for what an irreligious world is

Yes. One reason is because people would stop looking to a god to fix everything and look to mankind for answers. Religion divides the people of the world. Think of all the time and money and energy spent on war that could have been spent on research and scientific progress.

Humans are born with an understanding of most morals. What they don't know yet they can learn on their own without the help of religion. Yeah no religion would be great but its too late for that.
