I have a flaky scalp and have been considering dreads for about a year. I want to know if there is anything special that I should do before I start my dreads and what can I do to prevent flakes while I grow my dreads. I would prefer answers from those with experience. For reference I am going with the twisting method since it is most natural for me

I had dreads for a year before I couldn't take the itch any more! If you already have a flaky scalp, then dreads will not help resolve that - the fact that you will be unable to comb your hair will make your scalp even flakier and itchier. Even if you resolve this before dreading your hair, you will most likely experience it again once your dreads are in. If you still want dreads, consult a proper site like http://www.dreadheadhq.com and get proper products. BTW for the previous responder, having dreads doesn't mean you don't wash your hair! You still wash, just can't comb. Good luck!

You should visit with a hair technician regarding your scalp first because when you first start your dreads, the hair needs to be dry and oil free before adding moisture. ....

You can start with box braids and then continue to dread from there, I think then you can moisturize your scalp during the process.

But unfortunately, I have not had dreads before, so I'm not 100% sure....

You CAN have dreads and clean hair, people! It's the scalp that produces the oil, which is GOOD for your hair because it's job is to coat the strand and protect it.

Most shampoos are loaded with junk and are incredibly harsh and unsuited for hair. Use a good quality shampoo without Ammonium or Sodium laureth sulfate. Bert's Bee's is a good one, or any salon quality shampoo. The chemcials they put in shampoo to make it foam are unnecessary, and just end up coating your hair with soapy film.

Some use the conditioner only method, in which they wash their hair with diluted conditioner.

Keep in mind the beauty industry likes us to believe that not washing your hair everyday is disgusting. The truth is, why the hell SHOULD we wash it everyday? Sometimes you just don't need it, and you're only stripping your hair of moisture when you do.

You could also rinse your hair after a wash with distilled water to keep minerals from building up. Use a good quality dread wax to keep your dreads styled and looking neat.
