Actually my pet(4 months old cat)had undergone a sterilization operation 15 days back on 1.1.2007.an incision was made on the right side of the abdomen and closed by staplers.ten days after the surgery a small swelling appeared around the incision area and started oozing out the pus.then i consulted my vet and he gave penicillin injection along with oral antibiotics.but he told no need to drain the pus.after that the swelling subsides but again swelling start appearing now.but my cat is active only.in my native place no care is given for cats(compared to dogs and other animals) from the vet side.so please anyone give me suggestions(please ask your veterinarian).I'm a medical student so give suggestions so that i can execute any procedures safely.

I had a rescue cat that was sterilized and the vet left his little ball sack open to drain. Well cats a notorious for healing over the surface before the inside heals which will create infection. His ball sack burst open and infection flew everywhere. My vet did the same as yours, antibiotic shot and oral antibiotics. Just keep up with the oral antibiotics and I am sure your kitty will be fine, mine was in a matter of days. You might also try plain neosprin to keep the top of the incision from drying out therefore not allowing any infection to drain.
Good luck to you!!!

Your cat has had a bad surgery. He has a post operative infection. He should be on a course of anti-biotics for at minumum of 14 days. It is normal for a penicillan shot to make it appear that the infection is gone, but the oral antibiotics need to be continued to completely get rid of the infection.

I agree, no need to drain the puss, unless it starts to build in a pocket under the skin, but doing this could be extreamly painful for your cat. Do the antibiotics, and give them a chance to work. Inthe interim, a warm damp wash cloth applied a few times a day will help with pain and swelling. Just hold the cloth on till room temp, then wipe VERY gently around the incision. Also, have the vet check when the staples are removed if they haven't already been taken out.

Antibiotics are given 10 to 14 days in the US.Amoxicillin, keflex, are very commonly used as broad spectrum antibiotics on cats. The cat should improve after 3 days of therapy, if not a switch may be required. The staples should be out by now. The wound might incise itself and the area will drain. Clean it with 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water to prevent drying. Studies show that alcohol can impede the healing process. My thoughts are with you. Sometimes the dose of Amoxicillin is increased to qid because of the severity of the infection. May things improve soon. Are you in India, by chance? Just curious.

Since when do they staple a sterilization incision? I'd be afraid that the staple would puncture a organ.
